COREY SCOTT-GILBERT

Corey Scott-Gilbert was born in Washington, D.C. in 1983. After graduation from the Baltimore School for the Arts and The Juilliard School, he became a soloist with the Lyon Opera Ballet, receiving the Princess Grace Award in 2009. He has been featured in the 84th Academy Awards (2012) and Louis Vuitton Shows (2021-2022). Following his mentorship by Alonzo King and an ankle injury, Scott-Gilbert’s path shifted to that of an independent artist based in Berlin, engaging in collaborations with Eszter Salamon, Sasha Waltz, Julian Rosenfeldt and Ligia Lewis.

DEGREES OF VACANCY

Contemporary Movement Workshop

Degrees of Vacancy is the practice of diffusing external frequencies to reintegrate and fine-tune our internal rhythms. Imagining the body as a hotel full of cluttered rooms, participants are guided through a series of investigations which culminate in recalibration. Focus is allowed to blur, inviting spatial and temporal disorientation, as tasks of compassion - whimsical yet genuine, like singing a love song to oneself and one’s demons - are introduced. The body becomes more spacious and available; the mind becomes clearer and more deliberately attentive. Rooms are decluttered. Movement is motivated by intention and executed with specificity. This state lends itself to embodying, with sensitivity to the infinite possibilities of creation, a spectrum of ideas and physicalities demanded by artistic work.

The workshop is suitable for all those eager to understand how the emptying of ego and expectation makes way for the unknown to become realized, and the unstable to become a source of stability. Whether harnessed to channel a role on stage or meet the anxieties of everyday life, Degrees of Vacancy ushers in a shedding and a slowing down, facilitating a more conscious inner dialogue on our conduct and our flow through the world.

RHYTHM WORKSHOP

These sessions will focus on the assembly and deconstruction of virtuosic and composed rhythmic phrases. These phrases will anchor our guided improvisations to navigate how to hold tension in both time and space.

For the most full and beneficial experience, it is highly recommended you also join the "Degrees of Vacancy" workshop that takes place directly before the "Rhythm" workshop.

AUDIBLE BREATH, AUDIBLE BODY WORKSHOP

These sessions will explore how audible breath can inform movement. By allowing utterances to be the catalyst for how we shift and move through space, we invite the possibility for words to be interrogated by movement.

For the most full and beneficial experience, it is highly recommended you also join the "Degrees of Vacancy" workshop that takes place directly before the "Audible Breath, Audible Body" workshop.
